It is you either love the idea of breastmilk jewellery or you are totally confused about it. Some people are even totally grossed out by it. But let me explain a little while I believe breastmilk jewellery is something so very special.
For me it is not so much about the medium breastmilk. I breastfed all my four children and it was natural to me. I didn’t make a big fuss about, it just happened. I personally do not care how one feeds their child, I am all for supporting one another.
At the same time, I was also incredibly uneducated and didn’t realise how many women actually do struggle to breastfeed. How many women feel they are not worthy mums because they cannot feed. I didn’t know the physical and emotional pain some women feel while feeding.
‘I didn’t realise the pear pressure some women feel and the guilt of ‘not being good enough’.
To read messages from women all over the word, sometimes in tears, letting me in on their journey, feeding their bubs and how proud they are that they have achieved little milestones.
3 weeks, 3 month or 3 years and all in between. Now I cannot help but be excited for this person and this excitement drives me to create breastmilk jewellery. A piece of keepsake art that will remind you how strong you are, how well you have done and that you can be incredibly proud of your journey.
You see, it is not so much about the breastmilk. It’s about supporting one another, it’s about listening and to be there for someone with my keepsake art. And hopefully in years to come it will remind you how strong you were back than and how cute your tiny back chatting toddler was then.
You are welcome to read on a little bit on how we transform your milk into a solid medium that is suitable to be formed into a keepsake ‘stone like gem’.
I kind of fell into the ‘breastmilk keepsake’ jewellery world. We went from one order a week to a basket full of orders.
I had to learn really quickly to organise your keepsake from the very moment they arrive at our studio. Everything is checked, labelled and stored away.
We have tried so many methods of preserving breastmilk that I am sure someone should hand us out a certificate stating ‘determination award’.
No one did, of course!!!
We start our preservation journey by sterilising your milk. We started doing this is a high quality pressure cooker but due to the volume of orders, we are going to purchase a medical autoclave. YAY!
Yet, not all bacteria can be 100 % eliminated by pressure cooking. This would be to easy, right?
We have tried many different preservatives. Everything from formalin to something more organic like citric acid or vinegar. Yet, we were not satisfied with the end result.
We faced three challenges while preserving breastmilk:
- Preserving the milk effectively
- Keeping the natural milk colour
- Use a method that is compatible with our resin
After months of researching and consulting with pharmacists, labs and professionals from both food industry and chemical industry, we had finally narrowed it down.
We now use a combination of three different preservatives. All carefully measured and adjusted to the consistency of your milk. And trust me, no milk is ever the same. It is simply incredible.
We use a centrifuge to split the milk from the fat. Our resin doesn’t tolerate any traces of fat. Do you know that the fat content in your milk depends on the age of your baby. Super interesting this whole mummy milk making business.
After we have separated the milk from the fat, we dry the milk completely. Sometimes we make a powder and other times we transform her into a milky ink. Sometimes this can take a day and sometimes a week. Although we have a dehydrator for this, we found that it made no real difference. When we lived in a more humid prone area, our dehydrator was running 24 /7. We have recently found a product that allows us to too speed up the project but it still is a little trial and error at this point. You see, we are always looking for ways to improve our technique so we can create amazingly good keepsakes. Keepsakes that last.
All our resin creations are heat cured. Heat curing will expand and compress the resin stone and it builds up the strength in your keepsake, making it last longer. We have tried so many different resins and until this date we still choose different types of resins for different jewellery types.
*** Edit 07/18 *** using now our very own “Immerstone” formula that is more keepsake and less resin. An actual keepsake stone 😉 !
All my Love,
